|On February 17, 2013, Best Buddies kicked off rodeo season in Houston by celebrating friendship and food with the 5th annual Cook - Off fundraiser hosted by Ginger Man Pub.|
Ginger Man Pub of Houston’s Rice Village held a one pot cook-off featuring ten teams competing for people’s choice and judge’s choice awards. Teams offered up delicious entries that consisted of stews, soups, and of course a Texas staple – chili! All proceeds from the event went to benefit Best Buddies Texas (BBTX) programs!
Raffle tickets for over 60 prizes consisting of gift cards to local businesses, coveted beer paraphernalia, and other goodies were sold. A silent auction was held that featured such unique gems as a Shiner electric guitar. Also, tips used to indicate the People’s Choice cook off winners were donated to BBTX. The fundraiser generated over $2,500 in support of the Best Buddies mission!
This year even more of Best Buddies’ participants were involved in the cook-off action as one cooking team consisted of high school Buddy - Patrick Smith, and his mother Michelle, from Bellaire’s chapter. Another Buddy, Tatum Banks, from Lamar High School served as a judge for the cook-off. She sat alongside three of Houston’s top professionals from the restaurant and beer worlds to critique the entries and come up with the winners!

It is a joy to have such wonderful support from local businesses and people in the community that believe in our mission of friendship, leadership, inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The partnerships made are so appreciated and we thank Ginger Man Pub for their continued generosity in helping us to spread our mission! A huge thank you goes out to all who attended, all the teams, and all of the people and companies that donated time, money, and products to make this event a success!
And now it’s officially rodeo time in Houston!
